Pumpkin Season

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

This is the time of year when pumpkin is iconic. Between Halloween, harvest decorations, and Thanksgiving pie, it’s the season’s symbol.

The Great and Healthy Pumpkin

Pumpkin’s wholesome taste and inviting color complements soups, sweets, and breads while boosting the nutrition of every dish.

Pumpkin offers a good source of beta carotene, an antioxidant that may help prevent heart disease and certain types of cancer; fiber, which aids in digestion and helps lower cholesterol; and potassium, which helps keep blood pressure in check.

One cup of mashed pumpkin weighs in at 49 calories, 2.7 grams of fiber, 1.8 gram of protein, 567 milligrams of potassium, 5116 micrograms of Vitamin-A, 0.17 grams of fat (none of it saturated), and no cholesterol.

Enviga, by Coca-Cola equals Negative Calories?

Wednesday, October 18th, 2006

Enviga, the calorie burnerEnviga hits the U.S. market in the Northeast in November and will roll out nationally in January 2007. A sparkling green tea containing green tea extracts, calcium, and caffeine, Enviga was conceived by a joint venture between Nestlé  and The Coca-Cola Company.  It will be available in 3 flavors: green tea, berry and peach. You’ll find it in the ready-to-drink tea section at supermarkets, mass merchandisers, convenience and drug stores, and club stores. Expect to see prices between $1.29 - $1.49 per can.

According to Coca-Cola, studies have shown that when EGCG (a naturally ocurring antioxidant in tea) and caffeine are present at the levels comparable to that in three cans of Enviga, healthy subjects in the lean to normal weight range can experience an average increase in calorie burning by 60 – 100 calories. Enviga provides 90 mg of EGCG in each serving, along with 20 percent of the daily value for calcium.

So for each can you consume you may burn around 20 calories, versus, adding 150+ calories when drinking a can of regular Coke. Not too shabby if you are a soft drink addict and start drinking Enviga instead. Of courses, WATER would be better yet.

Did you also know that Celery is considered a naturally occuring negative calorie food? That’s BEFORE you slather on the peanut butter or cream cheese though! It you eat it plain and raw supposedly your body will use slightly more calories digesting the celery then the celery provides. Celery is also a good source of fiber, and potassium.

So next time you’ve got the munchies, grab some celery stalks, and an Enviga instead of Doritos and Coke! But make it AFTER you’ve come back from the gym!

Reuters.com reported yesterday that scientists in Japan have isolated a molecule, called nesfatin-1, that is responsible for making mammals feel full.

Obviously, Kate Bosworth is way ahead of the guys in Japan and has figured out how to apply this to humans. Wow! That’s insane amounts of unhealthy.
