Weight Loss In A Can?

Tuesday, November 28th, 2006

Coca-Cola and Nestle are getting behind a new canned drink that will be hitting the shelves this January.  That drink, Enviga, they claim is “negative calorie” drink, in that it has no calories in it and instead will burn calories.

A single study done at the University of Lausanne tested 31 people drinking the beverage.  The results found that “…3 servings/day of the test beverage significantly increased in 24-h EE [Energy Expenditure], without any adverse effects on heart rate or blood pressure.”

Nestle says that you need to drink three of these cans a day.  A little math and you get the following breakdown:

3 cans a day x 35 days = 105 cans = 3,500 calories burned = 1 pound weight loss

At $1.40 per can, that is $147 spent to lose one pound.  At that rate, even premium gym membership prices are looking pretty sweet.

LA Weight Loss vs Girl Scouts of America

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006

Seems like the Girls Scouts in Raritan, New Jersey have offended clients of a LA Weight Loss center near their cookie booth.

Kara L. Richardson, Courier News:

Dorothy DiNorcia of Raritan Borough was renting a movie in Blockbuster when she said she heard a clerk there tell his manager, “I have LA Weight Loss on the phone. They are threatening to call the police if we don’t get them (the Girl Scouts) to move from in front of our store.”

Perhaps instead of threatening children LA Weight Loss could have used this as a learning opportunity in restraint and moderation.

Personally, my favorite Girl Scout cookies are the Tagalongs. Trefoils being a close second. Yum! Hard as it may be I think we ALL know that downing a box in one sitting is never conducive to losing weight …

Fifty-Three European countries will bring their Health Ministers and senior official together to discuss the alarming rise in obesity, which they see as the great public health challenge they face.  Currently in the region, it has been recorded that half of all adults and one in five children are overweight.

During the three day meeting in Instanbul, it is expected that the countries will sign a European Charter on Counteracting Obesity, which will outline guidelines to counterattack the disease.

Trim The Calories From Thanksgiving

Friday, November 10th, 2006

mao.gifThose ne’er-do-wells at The Mayo Clinic have offered some ideas for trimming away excess calories during this year’s Thanksgiving feast in their November issue of the Mayo Clinic Health Letter.  Read on and decide for yourself if these progressive hints will slowly destroy the traditional values of Thanksgiving eating.

Turkey: Roast the turkey on a rack so that fat drips through and the meat doesn’t reabsorb the drippings.

Stuffing: Bake the stuffing in a separate covered dish. (Stuffing inside the turkey absorbs fat.) Use less oil, butter or margarine when sautéing the onions and celery or use low-fat chicken broth instead.

Gravy: Skim fat from the top of the turkey drippings or use a fat separator.

Mashed potatoes: Skip the butter when you mash potatoes. Instead, use skim milk or low-sodium vegetable or chicken broth.

Pie: With most baked goods, you can reduce by half the sugar in a recipe. Use skim or low-fat dairy products in place of whole milk products. You can use two eggs whites instead of a whole egg, without affecting texture or taste.

Kirstie Alley, weight loss, and a bikini

Tuesday, November 7th, 2006

Kirstie Alley aka The Fat Actress drops the excess baggage and dons a bikini for Oprah. Check out the show recap for what went down.

On Kirstie’s blog hosted at Jenny Craig she shares her reasons for wanting to lose weight and wear a bikini again as well as the steps she’s taken to reach her goals.

The most important reason I want to wear a bikini on Oprah however, is because if I, a 55 year old woman can look even half way decent, imagine how all of you could look in a bikini. Then all of us can breathe a little easier. Hell, I’ll never look like Giselle, I never did! But maybe close to Bridget Jones or a Dove girl or something that is just fine and healthy and happy with no surgery, no lypo and no drugs-that’s saying something!

Very inspiring. You go girl!!

Kirstie through the years culminating in her recent bikini appearance on Oprah. And for those of you who criticize her for not looking like she did 20-30 years ago, get over it! Women have babies, age, and their bodies change. No amount of diet and exercise can change nature. She looks fantastic.
